Village Service (Bakti Desa)

Bakti Desa is a program held by SMAN 3 Bandung every year that have 11th graders visiting village at the countryside. Our purposes visiting the village are to blend in with the people there and to learn how people live at village like their lifestyles, jobs, etc. Each class were divided by 8 groups that had 4 people in it. Each group will have foster parents that will take care of them and they will provide the group homes for them. I was in the same group as Fitya, Amara, and Nursyifa.

At January 3rd, we went to Cibeureum Village at Kabupaten Bandung. Before going to Cibeureum, we gathered at school and left SMAN 3 Bandung at 7 am. We used public transportation (angkot) that contained about 15 people in it and it was so packed. After about 2 hours, we arrived at the village hall at 10 am. There, we loaded our things out of the angkots then attended the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony lasted for about 2 hours long and we had lunch  right after it ended. Then, we walked to our foster homes guided by a local villager that I don't remember what her name is but she was really nice to us. We finally arrived at our house around 2 pm. We met our foster parents, Bu Omah and then we had some conversations with her. After that, she let us had some rest and unpacked our things. There were no certain schedule and we didn't know what to do. So we decided to take a bath and did ashar pray. Then, our friends visited us and told us that we were going to teach in the TPA or some kind of Quran learning club for kids around the mosque near our foster homes. At night, we had a meeting near the mosque to discuss about donations that we had collected to be distributed to the people who are in need around this area. We also planned to hold a bazaar for free clothes at the Posyandu. After the meeting, we took the donations to give them to people that had listed by our teacher. After that, we finally went home and took a rest.

The next day, we went with our foster parent to help them working on their farm. We were really excited since the morning we wake up. And then after breakfast, we walked to their farm on foot, lead by Bu Omah, my foster parent. To reach the farm, we had to walk through tea fields and small forest which had great views.

The air was so fresh and the sun was still not too up in the sky. So, we had great time walking eventhough the path was not wide and kind of slippery so we had to be careful since we might slip or fall. It took about an hour or more until we finally arrived. Our parents usually grow many kind of corps like cabbages, scallions, carrots, etc. but they currently only grow scallions in their farm. We helped them taking care of the farm by pulling out dead leeks and the weeds so it wouldn't disturb the scallions growth. We also talked with the other farmers that work in that farm. They told us that they work everyday from morning until Dzuhur pray and they get paid for about Rp. 30.000-40.000 per day so it's barely cover their daily needs.
After gardening, we walked home because it's friday so the boys need to take Jumat pray at mosque. We took a bath and prepared for bazaar this afternoon. After taking Jumat pray and preparing, we opened the baazar around 4 pm. There were some people who were already waiting outside the gates before we opened it. Each of us held 3 clothes and we also put some of the clothes on the table. The people who were just waiting immediately took the clothes and all of the clothes were sold in a second.
The next activity was playing with the kids just like how we were the day before. But, this time, we did it in a vacant ground in front of one of the villager's house that is located beside the rice field. We played some games that we used to play when we were kids like Ular Naga. The kids made a long line like snake then two people held their hands and lifted them, being the gate. We sang the song while the kids sang and walked pass the gate. When the song stopped, the person below the gate would be caught and became the 'ucing'. We also danced around and the boys played soccer with the kids. I only watched them and ate my Cilok. Since it was our last meeting with the kids, we had to say goodbye to them. We also gave them jellys on their way back home. It was new for me to interact with kids since I don't usually do that in real life. But it actually felt good and fun.
After the TPA meeting, we finally strolled around the village to have great views and photos. We visited green hill that we called Bukit Teletubbies and a suspension bridge above a river and farms.

The last day in Cibereum, we visited Situ Cisanti lake in the morning. We took some photos and enjoyed the view of the lake. After that, we packed our staff and prepared going home to Bandung City. The closing ceremony was held and we finally rocketed back to our home.

That was my story visiting  Cibeureum. It was a new experience for me to live in the countryside and work in farm. There are many lessons that I could learn from this event like how I have to always grateful of what I have since living in the village is harder than in the city. I also faced some problems such as the salary that the farmers get is barely enough for their daily needs. So, I think the solution is the owner of the farms should pay them more since the farmers make it their main job to fulfill their need.

That's all for me, thankyou for reading!
